Dog Sledding – An Arctic Legacy

Dog sledding has a long and proud history in the Arctic regions, where it was once the main form of transportation across snow-covered lands. This method of travel remains a powerful symbol of Arctic life and tradition. Traditionally, a musher – the sled driver – stands at the back of the sled and uses voice commands and gentle physical cues to guide the dogs.

The sled dogs, often Alaskan Malamutes or Siberian Huskies, are known for their strength, endurance, and high intelligence. These loyal companions are an essential part of the experience and are well cared for, trained, and born for winter life with their thick coats. These large dogs require regular exercise and training to stay in top condition and love to run, making them perfect companions for this traditional and exciting sport.

What to Expect from Dog Sledding in Tromsø

Upon arrival, Tromsø Villmarkssenter will provide you with thermal overalls to keep you warm in the cold Arctic weather. We also recommend wearing warm base layers and wool socks beneath the thermal clothing provided – in addition to bringing some sunglasses and gloves – for maximum warmth and comfort. Experienced guides will then give you clear instructions on how to control the sled and interact with the dogs before you set off.

You and one travel companion will share one sled, taking turns as the driver. Halfway through the tour, you'll switch roles, ensuring both of you get to experience mushing. You’ll travel approximately four kilometers through the scenic winter landscape, and along the way you’ll meet up to 300 friendly and enthusiastic dogs up close – a perfect opportunity for dog lovers and photographers alike. Each sled is pulled by 5–7 dogs, and professional guides will lead the way on a separate sled to ensure safety and support on your trip.

Once the ride is over, you’ll be invited  to enjoy a traditional Sámi meal of Bidos – a hearty dish made from reindeer meat, vegetables, and broth. It's the perfect way to warm up after your Arctic excursion. Vegetarian options are also available upon request.

Amazing cruise even though the weather was not great the tour operator did everything to help make the trip fun. Saw various birds and even managed to catch a fish. Food was also great and plentiful, even catered for food allergies.

It was a really really good experience, very well organized and father and son were a really good crew. We had done to the wale safari too which was also a good trip, Thomas is a really nice and friendly guy. We can only say we will do it again if we stay in tromsø.

Amazing trip. The guides were fun, friendly and helpful. They shared stories about them and interesting information about the area. The captain was great at getting close to the whales, we got there before everyone else each time.
